Espanha na CPLP: uma oportunidade para redefinir a nossa diplomacia a partir da Galiza

Connect to IGADI TV: Conference “Spain in the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP): New Horizons for 21st-Century Multilateralism”

The Conference will be presented in the format of an IGADI TV program and will feature the participation of specialists, public representatives, and members of civil society. Full of surprises, it will be held on the eve of the 51st anniversary of the Carnation Revolution in Portugal.

IGADI is organizing an online Conference next Thursday, April 24, from 12:00 to 15:00, which will combine analytical presentations, interviews, and a final roundtable discussion.

The event will be held in Galician-Portuguese and Spanish, with the collaboration of UNED Pontevedra, which will issue a certificate of participation to those who register through its platform.

The core presentations of the Conference are as follows:

  • A History for the 21st Century: From the Orthographic Agreement to Spain’s accession to the CPLP. By Daniel González Palau, Director of IGADI.
  • Spain’s image in Portuguese-speaking countries. By Carlos Pazos Justo, Professor at the University of Minho, Galabra Network, and Associate Researcher at IGADI-OGALUS.
  • Economic relations between Spain, Galicia, and Portuguese-speaking countries. By Diego Sande, Professor at the University of Santiago de Compostela, IDEGA researcher and Coordinator of the Economics Research Line at IGADI.
  • The CPLP, Francophonie, and Commonwealth: Language diplomacy in 21st-century multilateralism. By João Casqueira, Professor at the Fernando Pessoa University in Porto, CEPESE researcher and Associate Researcher at IGADI-OGALUS.

The project “Spain in the CPLP” has been developed from the accumulated work of IGADI (1991–2025), since the establishment of the Galician Observatory of Lusophony (OGALUS) in 2008 among its research lines, and from the research “A History for the 21st Century”, which follows the trajectory of the Paz Andrade Initiative and subsequent Law —now marking its eleventh year in 2025.

Rooted in these foundations, the project revolves around a final Report aimed at encouraging more constructive and effective participation of Spain as an Associate Observer in the CPLP. The Report includes a chronicle of Galicia’s contemporary relations with Lusophony —which led to Spain’s accession as an Associate Observer in 2021—, an analysis of the role of Associate Observers in the CPLP, the conclusions from a multi-actor dialogue with 25 experts, and the definition of future scenarios.

The project is funded by the Spanish Secretariat of State for Foreign and Global Affairs, under the 2024 call for projects For the study, analysis, and implementation of the priorities of Spanish foreign policy.
