The Impact of Taiwan on the Geopolitical Balance

Taiwan´s geopolitical significance cannot be overstated because it is situated at the heart of the Asia pacific region, and also occupies a key position in global and Indo-Pacific security and a critical hub for global trade, economy and technology. Besides, Taiwan is also as a symbol of democracy and freedom which standing firmly to against authoritarian rule.  Therefore, the geopolitical balance of Taiwan affects safety and stability of whole region and the world in security, economic, trade, technology, international order, democracy and more.

The potential conflict over Taiwan is because of strategic importance of military advancement of China and posture of the U.S. and its allies. The military and economic status of Taiwan also is a defining element in the strategic competition between U.S. and China. Since Taiwan is outside of control of China, China´s military capabilities remain constrained which limiting its ability to project power beyond its shores.  If Taiwan is under China´s control, China could significantly restrict U.S. to defend its Asian allies and further extending its territory, naval and aerospace power into its regional dominance and the deep of Pacific. The prime minister of Japan declare that Taiwan crisis would be a threat to Japan when other Pacific countries also claim same concern.

Taiwan plays central role in technological supply in the world and owns the technological know-how to make the smallest, most advance chips and produce more than 90 percent of them. These semiconductors are vital for cutting-edge technologies, including AI, advanced defense system, data centers and more which make Taiwan an essential player in the ongoing technological competition.  The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimates disruptions to the supply of these technologies could potentially wipe out trillions of dollars from global GDP[1].  If Taiwan under China´s control, the balance of global technological power could potentially shift.

The impacts on the geopolitical are not only influencing military alliances, economic and technology, but also effect trade stability. As a strategic hub for maritime trade, Taiwan´s position would affect all the countries which reply on China and U.S. trade.  Any disruption to global supply chains could have serious consequence for business, economies, trade and technology around the world. Taiwan Trait is a critical shipping route with 44 percent of the world´s container fleet move through it in 2022 according to the report of U.S. Naval Institute[2].  If shipping through Taiwan Strait is disrupted, the same container ship will not just need to add much distance to overall route but also add significant the costs, delays and even affect the sustainable development. It will likewise give an authoritarian country the central role in maritime shipping. Taiwan Strait serves as a key transit point for trade between East Asia, the U.S. and Europe, also pose significant threats to regional stability, global security and the international order. Apulia G7 leaders’ communiqué[3] 2024 “reaffirm that maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan strait is indispensable to international security and prosperity.”

The devastating consequences also challenges fundamental principles of the international order and democratic movements. The international order particularly on the norm that borders cannot be changed by force.  If the borders can be changed by force, it will reinforce Russia´s invasion of Ukraine, and lead to challenge global stability, wear down confidence in international organizations and encourage other to challenge territorial boundary. Taiwan is a full democracy country with ranked 12th globally and ranked top in Asia and the only other Asian country ranked a full democracy was Japan ranking 16th globally, also China is categorized as an authoritarian regime according to 2024 democracy index published by Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). If Taiwan fall off, it would not only send the signal of retreat of democratic governance in Asia, also weaken global democratic movements.  Without mention Taiwan can benefit the technology advance and the world, Taiwan stands on the global balance of worldwide economics, international order, military tactic and political power, and inextricably linked with the broader security of the Indo pacific and global stability already make geopolitical balance of Taiwan cannot be disregarded. Therefore, not only United States is increasing access to military site to keep the region peaceful and stable, but Japan also increased its defense spending and extended its military cooperation with U.S to take these measures in anticipation of future confrontations involving Taiwan. US, Japan, India and Australia also indirectly align its goals with ensuring Taiwan´s security. Even NATO expressed concern over China’s action in the Taiwan strait as an unstable Taiwan Strait would destabilize stability in the region and even the world. A military confrontation would lead to devastating consequences for the global order, economy, trade and technology, and the way the world react would substantially affect whether the existing order remains resilient or shifts toward to multipolar and unstable world.
